  6. This document covers various topics concerning system configuration
  7. issues and other topics which are not covered by the BBEdit Lite User's
  8. Manual.

  11. System Requirements
  12. ------ ------------
  13. BBEdit Lite now requires System 7.0 or later in order to operate
  14. correctly. System 7.1 or later is required for use of Macintosh Drag and
  15. Drop, and use of System 7.5 or later is recommended.

  18. "Can't Purge a Locked Block" error
  19. ------ ----- - ------ ------ -----
  20.  
  21. If you receive this error message when trying to launch BBEdit, your
  22. system has been infected with the MDEF-B virus (or a variant of it). To
  23. correct this, run the Disinfectant utility to identify and repair any
  24. infected files.
  25.  
  26. Object Support Library Problems
  27. ------ ------- ------- --------
  28.  
  29. There is a bug in certain versions of the Object Support Library, a
  30. component of the OS used to support scriptable applications. This bug
  31. potentially affects all scriptable applications, not just BBEdit. Inside
  32. of BBEdit, the most common manifestation of this problem is an
  33. "insufficient memory" error message that results when you choose "About
  34. BBEdit..." Another frequently reported symptom is that BBEdit's
  35. scripting dictionary is unavailable when using the "Open Dictionary..."
  36. command from Apple's script editor (or other OSA script-authoring
  37. environments).
  38.  
  39. Version 1.2 of the Object Support Library (OSL) corrects the underlying
  40. fault. The updated OSL is included with MacOS 8. If you're using an
  41. earlier version of the OS, you can obtain the latest OSL via anonymous
  42. FTP from <ftp://ftp.scripting.com/apple/objectSupportLib.sit.hqx>.

  44. VM 8.0 Fix
  45. -- --- ---
  46.  
  47. We have identified a Mac OS 8.0 compatibility issue, which arises when
  48. using Apple's virtual memory (VM). Although this issue was originally
  49. confirmed to exist on 68040 systems, we have reason to believe that it
  50. may also occur on PowerPC systems.
  51.  
  52. When using our products, the problem manifests itself as generalized
  53. instability when running BBEdit (any version) under Mac OS 8.0 with
  54. virtual memory turned on. BBEdit may sometimes crash when starting up,
  55. but if it doesn't, other misbehaviors will present themselves, such as
  56. errors or garbled text when copying, pasting, or scrolling text.
  57.  
  58. However, the effects of this compatibility issue are not specifically
  59. related to BBEdit, and may affect other applications as well.
  60.  
  61. This compatibility issue will likely be addressed in a future release of
  62. Mac OS. In the meantime, we have written a system extension which should
  63. correct the problem. Open the "VM 8.0 Fix" folder, and drag the "VM 8.0
  64. Fix" file on to your active System folder. Then restart your machine.
  65.  
  66. The VM 8.0 Fix extension does not patch any Mac OS routines, nor will it
  67. load on any version of the Mac OS other than 8.0.0.
  68.  
  69. Mac OS 8.1 corrects the problem that necessitated the VM 8.0 fix; if you
  70. are using Mac OS 8.1 or later, the VM Fix will not load and will not
  71. affect the behavior of your system.
  72.  
  73. "Can't Undo" Alerts
  74. ------ ----- ------
  75. A number of actions, most notably many extensions, are not undoable.
  76. As a matter of course, BBEdit will pose an alert: "<action> is not
  77. undoable. Do you still wish to proceed?" If these alerts annoy you,
  78. you can turn them off. The appropriate option is in the Editor section
  79. of the "Preferences" dialog. (The "Preferences..." command is found 
  80. under the Edit menu.)
  81.  
  82. Desktop File Problems
  83. ------- ---- --------
  84. On occasion, you may find that the Finder does not display the correct
  85. icon for BBEdit documents, or that you cannot drag documents onto the
  86. BBEdit application (or an alias to the application) to open them.
  87.  
  88. This behavior is not indicative of a problem with BBEdit; rather, it is
  89. an indication that the database that the Finder uses to associate
  90. applications, icons, and documents (known as the "Desktop file") has
  91. become confused or corrupted.
  92.  
  93. When this happens, it is usually desirable to force the Finder to rebuild
  94. the Desktop. To do this, reboot your machine, and immediately hold down
  95. the Shift key until the message "Extensions Off" appears. As soon as
  96. this message appears, release the Shift key, and hold down the Command
  97. and Option keys. For each volume that mounts at startup, the Finder
  98. will ask whether you wish to rebuild the Desktop. Click "OK", and the
  99. Finder will do so.
  100.  
  101. Corruption in the Desktop file can also render BBEdit unable to locate
  102. external services. If you have a service installed (say, the THINK
  103. Project Manager), but BBEdit does not make the service available to you,
  104. rebuilding your desktop will usually help. (This assumes that you've
  105. already checked to make sure that the application you are trying to use
  106. is of an appropriate version.)
  107.  
  108. Memory Usage
  109. ------ -----
  110. BBEdit uses System temp memory to hold the files it opens, so you will
  111. not need to increase the application's partition size to edit large
  112. files. However, some operations, such as Copy and Paste on large blocks
  113. of text, performing a multi-file search over many files and folders, or
  114. using XTND translation to import and export files, requires that more
  115. memory be made directly available to the application. If you often
  116. perform tasks like these, we advise that you increase BBEdit's
  117. recommended memory size allocation, as your needs dictate.

  120. Printing with Substituted Fonts
  121. -------- ---- ----------- -----
  122. Because of idiosyncracies in various printer drivers, including both the 
  123. LaserWriter and StyleWriter drivers, there are some character spacing 
  124. anomalies when printing with a substituted monospaced font (i.e. Monaco). 
  125. To avoid these problems, print in a non-substituted, monospaced PostScript 
  126. font such as Courier. (With BBEdit, you can of course edit in one font, 
  127. and print in another.)

  130. Fractional Spacing
  131. ---------- -------
  132. BBEdit supports a "Fractional Spacing" option when printing. We
  133. recommend that you use this option if you are printing in a small
  134. (less than 9-point) font size.
  135.

  137. FaxSTF "FaxPrint" Printer Driver
  138. ------ ---------- ------- ------
  139. Version 2.2.3 of the "FaxPrint" printer driver, supplied with the FaxSTF
  140. fax software package, has a bug in it which can cause all applications,
  141. not just BBEdit, to malfunction. STF Technologies has been notified of
  142. the problem. In the meantime, to avoid potential problems, choose another
  143. printer driver, such as the ImageWriter or LaserWriter driver, except
  144. when you are planning to fax documents directly from within BBEdit.
  145.  
  146. Later versions of the FaxSTF software, used under System 7.5.3, reportedly 
  147. cause problems when opening files. Contact STF Technologies for the latest
  148. information on the availability of a fix.
  149.  
  150.  
  151. LaserWriter "Preferences Damaged" Warning
  152. ----------- --------------------- -------
  153. On occasion, version 8.2.2 of the LaserWriter driver will issue a
  154. warning message about missing or damaged preferences. We have contacted
  155. Apple regarding this issue, and they believe it to be due to a bug in
  156. the LaserWriter driver. We have also had reports that the recently
  157. released LaserWriter 8.3 driver may exhibit this same problem. If you
  158. get this message, simply choose "Page Setup" or "Print" from the File
  159. menu, and you should be able to continue without any difficulty.

  162. NOW Utilities
  163. --- ---------
  164. Older versions of Super Boomerang have a bug which affects BBEdit;
  165. in particular, you cannot type upper-case letters in the "Save As..."
  166. dialog. This bug is fixed in version 4.0 and later of the NOW Utilities
  167. package; contact Now Software for an update.
  168.  
  169. Now Save may cause BBEdit's "File" menu to become scrambled. If this
  170. happens, turn off Now Save when running BBEdit.
  171.  
  172. Please also note that you will not be able to modify the command key 
  173. equivalents for BBEdit's menu items using Now Menus.
  174.  
  175. We have received reports of problems caused by Now Utilities 6.0, and
  176. are currently investigating. Please check our Web site at

  180. Standard File Hacks
  181. -------- ---- -----
  182. There are some third-party extensions which modify the standard "Open"
  183. and "Save" dialogs (known colloquially as "Standard File"). In a couple
  184. of known cases, some of these extensions have a bug which causes
  185. correctly written applications to crash. Specifically:
  186.  
  187.     - "Click, there it is!", version 1.0.1. Version 1.0.4 or later have
  188.        fixed this problem. Registered owners should contact the author 
  189.        for more information.
  190.     
  191.     -  Quickeys version 2.1 also appears to have a similar problem. 
  192.        Please contact CE Software for an update.
  193.  
  194. If either of these extensions is installed, BBEdit will most likely
  195. crash when trying to bring up a Standard File dialog. (BBEdit's "Open"
  196. and "Save" dialogs should work correctly, but other dialogs, such as 
  197. the File Types section of the preferences dialog, will not.)
  198.  
  199. In addition, problems have been reported in which the Standard File
  200. Package crashes, or BBEdit takes an "emergency exit", when Peter
  201. Lewis' "CDIconKiller" extension is in use.
  202.  
  203. Finally, we have received reports that StuffIt Shortcut will sometimes
  204. cause BBEdit to crash when you choose "Open..." from the File menu.
  205. We are working with Aladdin to identify and resolve this issue.

  208. The BalloonWriter INIT
  209. --- ------------- ----
  210. Version 1.0.1 of Apple's "BalloonWriter" extension interferes with
  211. the correct display and operation of BBEdit's dynamic menus. To avoid
  212. this conflict, disable or remove BalloonWriter from your system.
